This is the soundtrack for “Prysm Break,” a Digipen student game which can be downloaded for free here:

All of the music in Prysm Break’s levels is produced by CRIME, a realtime system that generates music as you play. By using algorithms to determine the contour of the music, and then synthesizing the sound from scratch, CRIME makes music that is slightly different every time you run the game.

The 4 tracks you see here are samples of what the 4 different music generation algorithms used by CRIME produce during gameplay. Each algorithm draws from a different set of pitches, and use different rhythms and textures. More details about each algorithm can be found in the respective track descriptions.

The engine was programmed by Thomas Cushman, while the algorithms were developed and implemented largely by Kurtis Burton.
